Employee experience survey
Sickness absence is rising, people are leaving, or you pick up signals that something is wrong somewhere, but where exactly? An employee experience survey measures how employees experience their work, and opens up for discussion what now stays below the surface.
- Validated questionnaires via the Johan.nl platform
- Anonymous dashboard, comparable by team, job role and age
- Follow-up in the workplace possible, from workplace assessment to training

We link every survey to what we already do in the workplace: workplace assessment, stress management training and the deployment of ergocoaches.
— Why measure
Why you measure employee experience
In the Netherlands Working Conditions Survey (TNO/CBS, 2025), 31% of employees report high job demands and 15% have stressful work: high job demands and little control. 21% report burnout complaints, and 37% think extra measures against work pressure and work stress are needed.
Those figures are self-reported, and that is precisely the point: how work is experienced cannot be seen from a workstation. Absence figures tell you what is happening; employee experience tells you why.
— The approach
How the survey works
The survey runs on Johan.nl, a Dutch platform for sustainable employability. Employees complete one or more validated questionnaires online. The results appear anonymously in a dashboard: you compare teams, job roles and age groups, but never see individual answers.
We organise the survey: the choice of questionnaires, the planning and the communication to employees.
— What you measure
Which questionnaires we use
Depending on your question, we choose from, among others:
DIX — sustainable employabilityQuestionnaire developed by TNO that measures sustainable employability on four components.
WAI — work abilityScientifically validated questionnaire that measures the work ability of employees.
Energy meterMaps mental energy: what gives energy and what costs energy.
Tailored modulesAdditional questionnaires on, among other things, working conditions and work performance.
— The reasons
When you use an employee experience survey
The reason is usually one of these five:
- sickness absence is rising without a clear cause;
- good people are leaving and you want to know why;
- managers or the works council pick up signals you want to test;
- after a reorganisation, relocation or a new way of working;
- as a deeper dive into the risk inventory and evaluation (RI&E): psychosocial workload (PSA), including work pressure, has to be assessed in it anyway.
— Our role
Our role in the survey
For the survey we use the Johan.nl platform. That is a deliberate choice: the platform is used by many organisations and service providers, the questionnaires are validated and the dashboard gives a clear picture of the results.
Our role is practical: we set up the survey for you and guide the implementation. If the results call for action in the workplace, you can come to us for that, from workplace assessment to training.
— The evidence
What the survey shows
Why does one team experience the same work pressure differently from another? The best-known model, by Karasek, puts the key in control: high job demands with control over your own work act as active work: people learn and grow. The same demands without control lead to strain-related complaints. The effort-recovery model by Meijman and Mulder adds that load reactions are reversible as long as recovery takes place; if recovery fails to happen, complaints pile up.
Precisely those two levers — control and recovery — are what an employee experience survey makes visible. That also explains the picture from the Netherlands Working Conditions Survey: 31% have high job demands, but 15% have stressful work. The difference is not less work, but how the work is organised.
— Questions
Frequently asked questions about employee experience surveys
Are employees' answers anonymous?
Yes. The results appear anonymised in the dashboard. You compare groups — team, job role, age — but you never see individual answers. That is also the condition for honest answers.
Is an employee experience survey mandatory?
No. What is mandatory is the risk inventory and evaluation (RI&E), and it must also assess psychosocial workload (PSA) — including work pressure. An employee experience survey is a serious way to fill in that component.
What is the difference from an employee satisfaction survey?
A satisfaction survey asks how satisfied people are. An employee experience survey measures the factors that determine employability: job demands, control, energy sources, recovery and work ability, with validated questionnaires instead of home-made questions.
What do you do yourselves and what does Johan.nl do?
Johan.nl provides the platform: the questionnaires, the secure data collection and the dashboard with the results. Ergomotion sets up the survey for you, handles the communication to employees and can take care of the follow-up in the workplace if there is reason to.
How much time does it take?
Completing the questionnaires takes little of employees' time. The lead time from launch to interpretation depends on the size of the organisation; we make concrete agreements about this in the first meeting.
What does an employee experience survey cost?
The price depends on the number of employees and the modules you choose. Request a quote and we will work it out for you.
What happens after the survey?
You receive the results in a clear dashboard. If you want to follow up — a workplace assessment where complaints occur, training where behaviour makes the difference — we can take care of that. With a repeat survey you see over time whether measures are working.
