FAQ

— Why lifting training?

Incorrect lifting is one of the leading causes of absenteeism

Physical strain is one of the most significant occupational risks in the Netherlands. Investing in prevention pays off for both employer and employee.
Source: Netherlands Labour Authority

77%

of musculoskeletal complaints are partially work-related.

30%

of work-related health complaints concern the back, neck, and shoulders. Lifting without the correct technique is a major cause.

  • Employees lift daily without ever having received proper instruction
  • Time pressure on the work floor often overrides correct technique
  • Aids are available but are not used or are used incorrectly
  • Prevention often comes too late, only once absenteeism is already a fact

The feeling that many people recognize

"I know perfectly well that I'm lifting incorrectly, but in the rush, I end up doing it the old way again."

★★★★★ 10/10

"The lifting techniques training was practical and immediately applicable. The trainer observed our work floor and let employees practice with their own tasks. The techniques are now used daily."

What you learn in the lifting techniques training

Core of the training: identifying lifting risks and learning the correct lifting technique, practiced in your own work situation.

Identifying lifting risks

You will learn to recognize where things go wrong when lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling. Not only with heavy loads, but also with frequent repetition and unfavorable postures.

Applying ergonomic lifting

You will learn the basic principles of ergonomic lifting: standing stably, keeping the load close, and working from the legs. According to the Physical Strain Practice Guidelines.

Using aids correctly

You will learn to assess which lifting aid fits the situation and how to use it safely and efficiently, from hand trucks and lift tables to patient lifts and slide sheets.

Lifting in your sector

You practice the techniques with the loads and situations from your own work. Boxes in the warehouse, clients in healthcare, materials on the construction site.

Lifting together and addressing each other

You will learn to lift together safely and how to address colleagues about risky lifting behavior in a constructive way. This ensures the technique sticks within the team.

Organizing lifting work smartly

You will learn to set up lifting work differently: lifting less frequently, shorter distances, and better working heights. The best lifting technique is not having to lift at all.

— Short, practical, and at your location

Lifting techniques training program

Theory: how strain occurs

Short theoretical foundation. You will learn how the back, shoulders, and joints are strained during lifting and why complaints arise. The emphasis of the training is on practice.

  • How to recognize risky lifting situations
  • How the back, muscles, and joints work during lifting
  • What the health-based lifting standard of 23 kg means in practice
  • The role pushing, pulling, and carrying play in physical strain
  • What the Working Conditions Act and the Physical Strain Practice Guidelines require
  • Why frequent light lifting can also be strenuous
  • How you can improve your own physical capacity
  • What you can do yourself to prevent complaints
  • How aids reduce the physical load

Practice: exercising with own work situations

The largest part of the training. Participants practice lifting techniques with the loads and aids from their own work. The trainer provides individual feedback and corrects immediately.

You will practice, among other things:

  • The basic technique of ergonomic lifting: stable stance, load close, from the legs

  • Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling the loads from your own work

  • Lifting together and lifting in difficult situations, such as cramped spaces and above shoulder height

  • The correct use of available lifting aids

  • Assessing and improving working heights and walking routes

  • Giving each other feedback on lifting behavior

Securing results on the work floor

In this section, we make agreements on how the correct technique will be maintained on the work floor. Training is only effective if what is learned becomes part of the daily routine. Therefore, we conclude with concrete work agreements for the team.

We also discuss how managers and colleagues can keep each other sharp. Addressing lifting behavior only works if it is done in a pleasant and constructive manner.

Agreements we record include:

  • Which aids are used as standard for which tasks
How colleagues address each other regarding risky lifting behavior
  • Which lifting situations will be organized differently
  • Who the point of contact is for questions about physical strain
  • How new employees learn the techniques
  • When a refresher session will be scheduled
  • Practical tip: combine the training with the Ergocoach course, so a colleague can continue to supervise the subject structurally.
  • This way, the training is not a one-off action, but the start of permanently healthier lifting work.

Preparation and setup of the training

The training lasts half a day and takes place at your location. In advance, we tailor the content to your work: which loads, which bottlenecks, and which aids are present.

This ensures every exercise aligns with the daily practice of the participants.

For larger groups, we schedule multiple sessions in one day so the entire department can be trained.

— FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the lifting techniques training

For which sectors is the lifting techniques training suitable?

Yes, the training is suitable for all sectors with physical work: healthcare, logistics, industry, construction, and engineering. We tailor the content to your situation. Is your organization also looking for an internal point of contact for physical strain? Then take a look at the courses Ergocoach Physical Strain, Ergocoach VDU work and Ergocoach Childcare.

What will I learn during the lifting techniques training?

The training consists of three parts:

  • Theory: how strain occurs during lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling and what the lifting standard says.
  • Practice: practicing ergonomic lifting with the loads and aids from your own work, with direct feedback from the trainer.
  • Securing results: work agreements on the use of aids and addressing each other on the work floor.

Who is the training intended for?

For employees who lift, carry, push, or pull daily. Think of healthcare workers, warehouse employees, production staff, construction workers, and mechanics. Managers also often participate, as they play a key role in securing the technique.

How long does the training last and what is the setup?

The training lasts half a day (3 to 4 hours) and takes place at your location. Short theory, then mainly practicing with situations from your own work. For larger groups, we schedule multiple sessions in one day.

Do participants receive a certificate?

Yes, participants receive a certificate of participation. This is useful for the personnel file and as supporting documentation for the RI&E.

Can the training also be given in-company (at our own location)?

Certainly, the training is ideally an in-company training. The trainer comes to your location and tailors the content to the workplace, the loads, and the available aids. Available from 5 participants.

What does Ergomotion's 100% satisfaction guarantee entail?

We believe fully in the quality of our training courses. If you are not satisfied with the knowledge gained or the applicability in practice after the training, we will not send an invoice.

What is the difference with the Physical Strain Training?

The Physical Strain Training is broader and covers pushing, pulling, static postures, and work organization in addition to lifting. The lifting techniques training zooms in on one skill: safe and efficient lifting. Not sure which one fits your team? Contact us, and we will think along with you.

How does the training help to reduce physical strain?

Incorrect lifting leads to back and shoulder complaints and eventually to absenteeism. By learning the correct technique, using aids properly, and organizing lifting work more smartly, the load per employee decreases. This reduces complaints and absenteeism.
