— Why

Why stress management?

Do you notice that stress plays a role in the workplace more and more often? You are not alone. Stress has become the number one occupational disease in the Netherlands. More than a million people are at risk of burnout every year, and 36% of sickness absence is directly caused by work stress.

As an HR professional or manager, you want a healthy, resilient and productive organisation. Yet in practice you see that employees struggle to let go of tension, to recover and to maintain their energy balance. Relaxation and recovery skills have often faded into the background, so stress builds up and motivation and performance come under pressure.

What is the programme?

Understanding stress

This part gives participants a deeper understanding of the underlying processes of stress. Attention is paid to how stress arises, how it manifests itself and how it influences thinking, feeling and behaviour.

The following themes are covered:

  • How beliefs, expectations and automatic thought patterns contribute to the experience of stress. This includes perfectionism, the need for control and negative interpretations of everyday situations.
  • The relationship between stress and emotions, such as frustration, anxiety and powerlessness. Participants learn how these emotions can build up and drive behaviour.
  • The different forms of stress, including acute stress, prolonged tension and chronic overload, and the distinction between functional and disruptive stress responses.
  • The signals and consequences of stress, both physical (such as fatigue, muscle tension and sleep problems) and mental (such as irritability, rumination and loss of concentration).
  • The interaction between stress and lifestyle: how movement, sleep, nutrition and breathing affect the recovery capacity of body and mind.
  • The role of work pressure, social expectations and organisational culture in the development and maintenance of stress complaints.

Techniques and personal application

This part focuses on translating insight into action. Participants are given practical tools to better recognise, regulate and prevent stress in themselves.

The following topics are covered:

  • Applying breathing exercises, relaxation techniques and attention training to calm the autonomic nervous system.
  • Skills in regulating emotions and dealing with triggers, with room for reflection on personal patterns.
  • Insight into your own limits and practising concrete behavioural choices, such as setting priorities, managing work pressure and protecting moments of recovery.
  • Discussing strategies to strengthen helpful habits in the context of work and private life, with attention to lasting behavioural change.
  • Drawing up a personal stress management plan, in which participants record their main insights, points of attention and intentions.
